December flashback

Jan 31, 2012

These were lost in the hustle of the holidays and I though them worthy of gracing the blog...enjoy.

Also, please note her half Christmas/half I just got lost at the zoo nee-nees.  The tradition of opening new jammies on Christmas eve, watching Scarlett put them on and begin dreaming of sugar plum fairies with a smile on her face, quickly turned into a disastrous breakdown at the suggestion of wearing  a matching combo of penguins with penguins.

It was bound to happen...

Jan 25, 2012

The terrible two breakdown, the "I'm so angry I don't even remember why I have been crying for ten minutes straight, but I do know that I don't want anything that you offer me, even if I say that I want it" fest.  It is like nothing I have ever seen.   Something takes over the beautiful, bubbly Scarlett that I know and love and replaces her with a foaming from the mouth, snot dripping down her face, scream, hit and run little toddler that refuses to be conquered.

Yesterday, after a wonderfully easy morning filled with laughter, hugs and rainbows, Scarlett turned ugly.  I tried everything in my power to calm her down..but I could tell with this breakdown she was in for the long haul.

Enter the long haul...
Step one - Bribing -  After running through the list of things I know she would much rather do than lay flailing on the floor and being turned down by each one with a forceful "no"...I move on to...
Step two - Distracting - Offering options of tea time with mommy, or help mommy pick our her clothes, or look at this really cool thing that is in another room and is totally awesome...the crying stops and I think I am victorious, right before the moment I have the nerve to dive into action and the screaming continues...leading me to...
Step three - Time out - enter blood curdling, I have never heard this sound come out of such a small creature in my life, scream for two whole minutes.  Add a dash of leg kicks and whole body wiggles and you have come to the fortunate end of step three.
Step four - Ignoring - Lets be honest...this is just too heartrenchingly awful to do and ALWAYS turns into this...
Step five -  Cuddling - After 45 minutes of steps one-four.,  step five is a must for both mother and daughter.
Step six -  bracing myself to tell Scarlett that I had to leave to get a hair cut...
Step seven - start all over

You know those times...

Jan 18, 2012

when life is totally crazy?  That is right now for the Becher family.

Chris and I just got back from a weekend in Vegas that was neither relaxing nor spontaneously exciting.  A bit of an unfortunate let down for both Chris and me.  We had a good time but realized that it could have swung from good to great with the addition of a few friends and an extra $200 spending cash.

Regardless, we are home and have found ourselves thrown into a whirlwind of overwhelming chaos.  Swamped at work, Chris planning for a new semester and me tearing my hair out trying to figure out a new billing program.  Chipping away at our Los Padres dinner in a little over a week and still testing every evening to get the  formula for perfection.  Overwhelmed with little red dots that show up EVERY day for the next 8 days on my iphone calendar.

Breakfast and play dates, online orders of food and special spices, gym class, guests for dinner, work and some how fitting Scarlett play time in there.  Thank goodness for the lists that keep my mind organized, but forgive me if this blog doesn't make it to the list in the next couple of weeks.

Sincerly,
The Chaos That is the Becher family

LA Zoo...

Jan 12, 2012

This was easily the best trip I have ever had to the zoo.  All of the animals were out and active and there were so many babies.  And even better than all that, Scarlett was interested...unlike this time and this time.

Apparently having cousins around is the trick to eating more food, taking more baths, and enjoying the zoo. Noted.

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

This was also a really special day because Scarlett got to spend most of it with her Uncle Paul.  Paul is in the Air force and stationed in Hawaii so visits are few and far between.  He is so sweet and playful with his nieces and nephew and I love watching them spend time together.  It was such a joy to be able to capture the special bond that has formed between them even through the distance.

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket

What kind of mothers would we be if we didn't at least try to capture all four cousins on film while one is having a minor asthma attach, two are trying to run in circles, and the last one just wants to throw the pine dust in the air?  Yep, smiling at the same time...that was definitely wishful thinking.

The LA Zoo is located in Griffith Park and it is a must see if you happen to be in a 20 mile radius of LA.

Conversations with Scarlett...

Jan 11, 2012

After listening to Scarlett tell a five minute story and understanding over 90% of it...

Me: Scarlett you are a genious
Scarlett:  No your a genious
Me: No Im pretty sure you are
Scarlett:  No mommy,  Im a big girl
Me:  Touche

Now I am just waiting for her to start using "touche" in a sentence.

Christmas with a two year old...(Part 3)

Jan 7, 2012

Christmas night we ran over to Chris's dads house to celebrate times three and let the kids go wild.
(no pictures here)

And when the kids retired to sleep, the adults danced their little kinect hearts out.

And this also happened...future bribery in it finest form.

and then we all passed out because of Christmas overload. The end!

Christmas with a two year old...(part 2)

Jan 6, 2012

Christmas morning at our house was unfortunately not captured via photo but know that Scarlett got a stocking full of nail polish and a fisher price digital camera.  The stocking was the highlight.  Note to self, next year, dollar store.

...so I will skip to Christmas brunch at Chris's moms house.

Chris's mom bought all the kids gold fish with the intention of putting them into her fountain, unfortunately the kids thought it would be fun to poke and play with the gold fish.  Needless to say by the time we left there was only one tiny goldfish that survived the attack. I assume he stayed at the bottom of the bowl or that he has scales of steel and a courageous heart.

I LOVE watching Scarlett and her cousins play together.  For me that is exactly what Christmas is all about.

Teaching spanish...

Me: Can you say boca?
Scarlett: bo-ca
Me: Can you say manos?
Scarlett: man-ohs
Me: Scarlett, can you say ojos?
Scarlett: No, but I can say elbows

And with that the lesson ended...

Christmas with a two year old...(part 1)

Let me just say that celebrating Christmas this year was so much fun.  Scarlett added a new depth to the joy of the season.  Everything was new and exciting.  Days were longer and fuller and by the end of the week we were ready for a much needed break from the Christmas excitement.  But watching Scarlett soak up the time with her extended family was well worth the five straight days of Christmas, too much sugar and late night bed times.

Christmas at my parents house (Christmas eve morning)...and again that night...

Every year someone in my family gets a surprise gift, usually attached to a string, attached to the tree.  This year it was my moms turn and we followed on the trail to find the gift...

while Scarlett played in the "much need of a trim" grass.

After a short stop by the church for our God daughters baptism...we headed back to my parents for Christmas with my whole family...

Barbie dolls...

Jan 4, 2012

Chris and I had a conversation last night that stuck with me through sleep and pushed its way into my morning.  Barbie dolls for little girls? Yes or no?

Chris argues that Barbie dolls skew a little girls sense of feminism and beauty?  That he would rather her learn these things from the women around her and not from a "perfect" version of woman in the form of a playful doll.  (Also keep in mind Chris holds a very strong aversion to branding, especially to children. Barbie could be argued to be one of the largest and most long lasting marketed toy products...this is where I think his argument begins, although he hasn't admitted it).

I argue that Barbie is nothing more than a doll.  A beautiful women yes, but also a opening to a world of imagination and creativity.  My memories of Barbie consist of changing clothes, cutting hair and attending tea parties. I have nothing but fond memories of my sister and I playing hair salon, washing and styling Barbie for hours.  I collected Barbie dolls and my mom still has her Barbie dolls from when she was a girl.  They are a staple in any little girls collection of toys and I was so surprised to hear Chris say that he had actually formed an opinion about Scarlett owning one.  I will admit I have never thought in depth about the subject nor thought about how owning a Barbie might effect Scarlett's view of women, or beauty...but I will say this, I do not want to deprive Scarlett of the quiet moments spent planning the perfect outfit for Barbies first date with Ken.

Any thoughts?  We would love to hear them...
